I don't quite remember when I fell in love with tea but I do remember the most special moments of me drinking tea. I was eighteen years old and I went to live with my biological mother for four months. I had just met her months earlier and it was awkward for both of us. She and her ex-husband lived a very quiet life in Boulder, Colorado. He was a professor at one of the universities and she was a housewife. After years of drug addiction and being in and out of jail, she deserved the break. I was homeless so she and her husband agreed to let me come live with them. Each evening my mother and I would find a spot in the living room with a cup of tea and a book.

Now, years later, I'm a self proclaimed tea expert. I start each day with a wonderful English Breakfast tea to get me going. As the day progresses, who knows what wonderful tea I will crown queen. But for sure, I have at least three cups of tea a day. And yes, when I can, I have tea everyday at about 3:00 P. M. I love to invite my friends over for tea and cupcakes and so far everyone thinks it’s a delightful experience. I am always in search of the best blend of tea. Yes, I’m a tea snob, I prefer loose tea but I do like some bags also. I have learned not to judge a book by it’s cover. Some bags can be quite nice. And yes again, any Diva knows, what you drink your tea out of is very important.

Tea for me is a way of life. It's wellness for the mind body and spirit. Here, I will explore every expect of tea possible, with a high concentration on wellness. I will review the best teas, the best places to have tea, the best ways to brew tea, the best tea accessories, what tea goes best with what foods, and the list goes on and on. I plan to share my passion for tea with you. And I've been told, nothing I do is ever boring so be prepared to go on this tea journey with me.

Mint Medley by The Persimmon Tree Tea Company

About This Tea:

Until recently I had never drank Peppermint Tea made with loose leaves. And Honestly, I will probably never go back. The freshness of loose Peppermint Tea cannot be denied. When I open the can of Mint Medley, From The Persimmon Tree Tea Company, I feel as if I stepped into a garden of peppermint leaves. It is a perfect blend of organic peppermint and spearmint leaves grown in the US.

Mint Medley has become a favorite and I find myself reaching for this tea tin almost everyday. It is great for on-going nausea. The health benefits and endless. It relieves muscle aches, headaches, migraines, stress. And now that it feels like someone is sitting on my chest and I have a mean cough, I'm sure it will help to relieve some of this congestion in my chest. Mint Medley has been in my tea cup more than any tea as of late. It has really helped with my winter cough, congestion related to this bout of pneumonia. Welcome to my world of books! As an pre-teen books changed my world. I fell in love with the writers of the Harlem Renaissance period and the more I read the more I wanted to read. The fiction of this period was powerful and empowering all at the same time. It spoke to my own degradation and gave me hope for a better tomorrow. It gave me purpose for my own life and the courage to fight the good fight and never surrender.

I love to read! Inside a book I escape into someone else's life. There is something wonderful about turning to the next page of a wonderful story. Something intoxicating about the smell of the book and the story it brings to life. Reading brings me joy, and these days with my health in the balance, I find solace in my books.

I spent hours in my bedroom sequestered with the door closed reading the classics from the Harlem Renaissance, Hughes, Larsen, Hurston, Wright and Baldwin. Books became my escape and my salvation. The fiction of this period was powerful and empowering all at the same time. It gave me purpose for my own life and the courage to fight the good fight and never surrender.

Reading is the one thing that the pain of my life could never take away from me. It was the thing that helped to make it better. And even today, living with AIDS, books continue to be the safest place for me. It’s the one thing that belongs to me that AIDS cannot take away from me.The RLTReads book club will be books that I choose. It’s me sharing a part of me with you that has nothing to do with AIDS. It’s actually in spite of AIDS.

The RLTReads book club will be books that I choose. It’s me sharing a part of me with you that has nothing to do with AIDS. It’s actually in spite of AIDS. I have read hundreds of books from many different genres and I will pick the best of my reads over the years. I warn you, it will not be exclusively white or black, male or female, fiction or non fiction, it will be all of them.

I’m so excited and I’m grateful to everyone who wants to be a part of this venture. We already have 110 Book Club Members. You can email me @ RLTReads@raelewisthornton.com. The Twitter hashtag is #RLTReads. We can make this book club as wonderful as we want to make it. Who says that Oprah has to have the only ownership to a wonderful book club?

Losing Sophie..

Two weeks ago today I stopped living after I put my baby girl Sophie down. Like for real, for real. Honest to God, I have never felt grief on this magnitude. While I still had breath in my body, my life stood still. Sophie was a special dog that left a foot print on everyone she encountered. For a moment I didn't think that I could go on. The grief was all consuming but like with most things in my life,  I kept going in spite of the pain. So here I am, still missing my baby girl and adjusting to life without her.

The last time I blogged was to tell you that Sophie had Liver Cancer. I thought that I had a week to find a solution but Sophie took a turn for the worst that night within hours of posting that blog. She didn't want to eat or walk and her breathing became erratic. I felt so helpless as the night progressed. The only thing I knew to do was to be as close to her as I could. She didn't want to sleep in the bed, so I made a pallet on the hardwood floor next to the big chair in my living room that she laid under. It was one of the longest nights of my life. She was restless and breathless. Every time she moved, I moved. When she got water I watched her until she was back under the chair resting. A few times she laid under my arms and then on the pallet, but mostly under the chair was her comfort zone.

By day break with almost no sleep Sophie was struggling just to breath. My baby girl was slipping before my eyes and I didn't know how to save her. It's still hard to believe that less than a week before this day, she was barking for bacon. Determined to make the plan Dr. Gill and I agreed on work, Tiara held Sophie in her lap as I gave her each medication. She looked up with sad eyes, "No mommie I don't want it," but it was all I could think to do.

In the two hours waiting on the animal clinic to open I prayed for a miracle as Sophie precious eyes cried, "help me Mommie, help me." I was asking for God's help and she was asking for my help.  When I finally reached Dr. Gill and filled her in on the night, I was still hoping for a solution; a way to help my baby girl. After I finished, Dr. Gill said, "You know there are only two choices and I'm not sure that she can make it through surgery.  "I know, I know" I said defeated and filled with anogny, with my baby girl next to me looking up at me, "Help me Mommie, help me." There was a pause, "Are you ready?" Dr Gill asked. Through my tears came, "yes."

Tiara and I rode in silence to the clinic while baby girl laid in my arms trying her best to catch her breath. "I'm sorry baby girl, Mommie loves you," I whispered to her. Once we arrived, Tiara and I took pictures with Sophie before I handed her to Dr. Gill to place the catheter.

She was in so much distress, Dr. Gill looked at her, "That baby can't get her breath," she said to Sophie. Tiara stood in the corner tears flowing.  I stood over sophie lying on the table still trying to get her breath. I was so overwhelmed with grief. "Thank you Sophie for eight wonderful years," I whispered to her, "Mommie will always love you."

Watching my baby girl die was one of the hardest things I've had to do, but yet at the same time I knew it was the best thing, most human thing. It was the last good thing that I could do for her.

Sophie Barking For Bacon 5 Days before I put her to rest.. Her BFF Kennedy was just hanging in the cut waiting... LOL... She barked for bacon ever morning I cooked... She barked for a treat each time I had a meal, it was our routine. She was so full of life the entire 8 years she was with me. I'm  glad that her suffering was not long, but I'm sad she had to go. I miss her dearly...

African-American 365 Health at Walgreens Corporate Office

On yesterday, I spoke at Walgreens for Black History Month at their corporate office. African-American 365 Health was a program focusing on health issues for African-Americans.

The program was a panel discussion.  The distinguished panel included, Dr. La Mar Hasbrouck, Director of Illinois Department of Health, Dr. Courtney Hollowell, Chairman of Urology, Cook Country Hospitals and Health System, Andrea Zopp, President and CEO, Chicago Urban League, and Sherrise Trotz, Executive Pharmacy Director, Midwest Operations Walgreens.

I was honored to have been asked to participate in this event. Walgreens employees made up the audience. They also live steamed the program to their hundred's of employees at their desk. It was a great discussion on the critical health issues for African-Americans.

Here are most of my remarks.

Finding Solace...

I woke up pretty sick this morning but at least I've washed my tail, put on clean PJ's and made it to the living room. For sure I'm healing pretty quickly, but this round of IV medication is getting the best of me. The side-effects have been more aggressive than usual.  I guess that's the trade-off.

Please keep me lifted in prayer. When the body is attacked, the hardest part is keeping my wits around me. Somewhere, I have to find hope in the midst of despair.  I do find solace in the fact that I woke up in a warm home, with a loving dog and yesssss I washed my tail! Yep, I'm working hard on operating in my blessing.

While I'm not focused enough to write a blog I wanted to share this interview series that I did with Kellie Terrell and TheBody.com. The Body is one of the largest online resources for HIV/AIDS with over few million views weekly. Kellie sat down with me in a three hour interview last winter  and they have divided the interview into six parts.  I'm also honored that my Diva Living With AIDS Blog is syndicated on theBody Blogs. There are other great HIV/AIDS related blogs there as well. You can find theBody on Twitter HERE.

I find solace in the fact that God continues to use my life to help enrich the lives of others. For sure, I will  continue to give my life, my story as a living sacrifice until the day that I die.

Exhale!!

We spend a whole lot of time waiting for shit to hit the fan. Yep, and in the interim, we miss so much of life. We inhale and hold our breath and wait. In the inhale, we forsake the living that is in front of us for the living that may affect us.

In honesty, I'm at fault too. I do it all the time. I do it more with my health than anything, waiting on what's next.  I'm starting to think that you steal the joy out of the right now waiting on the maybe so today, I'm Exhaling.... Join Me...

Day 35! Count Down To 50! New Attitude!

Today is Day 35 and I'm Counting Down To 50!  It was just one of those days. I did no real work. Not anything I was supposed to do. I did my morning devotional and after that I got connected to my IV medication. I spent two hours on twitter tweeting pictures of my RLT Collection customers wearing my bracelets. LOL... Don't judge me.

Anyhoo, I went to my jewelers and played in the fine stuff and then came home.  I love jewelry and it don't cost a darn thing to try it on.

Yes, the IV medication has started to kick my ass; diarrhea and nausea are number one. Yet, I'm hanging. God has got my spirit and so far, so good. This is what I'm saying, I am not gonna allow this it get the best of me this time around.

Well, I'm sure I will have some bad days, but I'm gonna try like hell to keep the best of me. I was so looking forward to this birthday count down and then this, my health decided to act a fool. But guess what? Nothing else has changed, As sure as I'm alive, I'm counting down and on May 22 I will be 50 years old. This means that I would have lived 29 years with HIV and 20 years with AIDS. This means I've lived over half my life with a disease that should have taken me out of here a good 16-17 years ago.

And while I would like something different for myself during this count down, this is all I got. It is what it is. With this in mind, I'm changing how I think about it all. With God guiding me each day, I mean really guiding me, I got this.

Yes, it is true, the longer that I am on this medication the sicker I am and the less I'll be able to do. Right now the infection is so bad, I just don't see myself getting off quicker than 20 days or more. Even with this understanding, what I know for sure:  God has got this and I'm staying as close to God as I can and with that single act of closeness to God, I got a new attitude!

Post Script: I want to share my devotional scripture for today;

Though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kind of trials. These have come so that your faith- of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire- may proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor, I Peter 1:6-7

Monday Reflection: Living With AIDS In My Own Voice!

Each day I sit at my computer trying to give you what I think God has given to me to give to you and it flows like a river. But then some days I sit at my computer with nothing to say and from
no where it hits me. There are even times when I start writing about one thing and it ends up being another. I never try to force it, I just write what God has put on my heart.

Today is one of those days when I stared at the computer for a few hours. It seems that each direction I go, I got lost. About two hours ago, I said to myself. I'm going to post my interview with veteran political reporter and former editor and chief of Emerge Magazine, George Curry, and be done with it; That seemed like an easy way out.  But then I never take the easy path do I?

But is seemed no matter how hard I tried to give you some inspiration by pen or should I say keyboard, the interview with George continues to come flat center stage to my mind..

So today, maybe I say it  in a different way. Maybe there is something that you need to hear in my voice #ForReal

This was a five hour interview for the best of what I had to say. Gerorge shaped  the two part interview to give a full understanding of what my life is like living with AIDS... I hope that it is helpful in some way.. I hope that it even helps you to understand my life in someway...

Tea With Rae: Get Out Of God's Way!

Almost everyone who comes to my home for any length of time must have tea. So yesterday, I grabbed the opportunity to introduce two 8th graders to my tea ritual. They were actually here to interview me for their school project. Arami had Double Dark Chocolate Matte by The Republic of Tea and Tyanna had Strawberry Rose by ESP Emporium. Amari is a regular reader of my blog so she was really excited to experience my tea ritual. But Tyanna was so excited that when her mother arrived, she told her absolutely everything I shared with them about tea, and eventually I brewed up a cup of Teavana Zingiber Ginger Coconut for mom. The girls enjoyed their tea and I enjoyed explaining to them the best ways to have tea. These young ladies were a delight and a blessing. They even hung around and edited my first video. I am proud to feature Arami and Tyanna in my first video, "Get Out Of God's Way!" I hope that you will support my video project by subscribing to my You Tube Channel, and if one is compelling, please feel free to share it on your Facebook page.
